If a customer asks ChatGPT or Gemini for a plumber in Chandigarh, the AI picks from the businesses whose websites it can actually read. That is the short answer from three large studies published in October and November 2026, and it changes how local businesses should think about being found.
Research from Strategi, Cloute, and BrightLocal all reached the same conclusion: your website is the anchor for AI recommendations. Directories, social media, and review sites play a minor role. If your own pages are not in the mix, the AI usually names a competitor instead.
Here is what the data says, and what it means for your business.
Three Studies, One Finding: Your Website Drives AI Recommendations
Strategi ran the largest test: 72,712 AI answers across 40,147 businesses in 10 countries, including India. They found that 84.8% of all sources AI engines cited were business websites. Directories accounted for 1.2%, review sites 0.4%, and social media (Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora combined) just 0.3%.
Cloute analyzed 64,441 AI answers and found that AI named a local business 83.7% of the time when it had opened one of that business’s own web pages. When it had not, the rate dropped to 16.2%. That is a 5.2x difference, and it held across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
BrightLocal’s 200,000-search study reinforced the pattern: the businesses AI recommends are the ones whose websites it can crawl, read, and cite. If you want to understand how your business shows up in AI answers, start with your own site using the approach we describe in our AEO and GEO services.
Which Pages Does AI Actually Cite?
Strategi broke down 213,564 business pages that AI cited. Homepages dominated at 61.5%, but service pages and inner pages mattered more for ranking first.
- Homepage only: 46.9% chance the business was named first
- Service or product page cited: 63.1%
- Other inner page cited: 67.5%
- Page naming the buyer’s city: 71%
In plain terms: having a homepage is table stakes. Having specific service pages and location pages is what pushes you to the top of the AI’s shortlist. A page that names the buyer’s city gives you a 71% chance of being the first business AI names, compared with 53% when the page does not.
Why Directories and Social Media Barely Matter for AI
This surprises people. For years, local SEO advice has focused on getting listed in as many directories as possible. That still helps for Google Maps and traditional local pack results, but for AI recommendations, directories are nearly invisible.
Strategi found directories at 1.2% of citations and social media at 0.3%. When AI engines build an answer, they open a handful of pages and write from what they read. If your business page is among those pages, you are in the room when the answer is written. If not, you depend on a directory or review site to carry your name, and most of the time, it does not.
That does not mean you should abandon directories. They still feed Google’s local pack and Maps. But if your goal is to appear when someone asks ChatGPT for the best dentist in Mohali, your website matters far more than your JustDial listing.
What AI Says About Your Business Comes From Your Site
Strategi read 294,236 mentions of businesses in AI answers and categorized the reasons AI gave for each recommendation. The top reasons were all facts businesses publish on their own websites:
- Services or specialization: 70.6% of mentions
- Location or service area: 48.3%
- Clients, scale, or notable projects: 42%
- Price or value: 38.6%
- Speed, availability, or convenience: 36.4%
- Experience and track record: 34.9%
- Reviews and ratings: 14.4%
Reviews came up in only 14.4% of answers. That is not nothing, but it is far behind services, location, and experience. If your website does not clearly state what you do, where you do it, and what makes you different, AI cannot recommend you for those reasons.
Practical Steps to Get AI to Recommend Your Business
Based on the data, here is what we would do first:
- Build specific service pages. One page per main service, with clear descriptions. AI cites service pages 63% of the time for first-ranked businesses versus 47% for homepage-only.
- Add your city to key pages. Pages that name the buyer’s city correlate with a 71% first-name rate versus 53% for pages that do not. If you serve Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, say so on the page.
- Publish pricing and project details. AI cites price and client projects as reasons in over 38% of mentions. If you do not put this information on your site, AI cannot use it to recommend you.
- Make sure AI can crawl your site. Check your robots.txt and server logs. If AI crawlers are blocked, your pages cannot be read or cited.
- Write for the question, not the keyword. AI answers questions. Your pages should answer the questions your customers actually ask, in plain language.
If you want a structured review of how your business appears across AI engines, our audit packages cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity for your industry and location.
The Gap Is Getting Wider, Not Narrower
Cloute found that on a first measurement, before any optimization work, 70% of AI answers named a competitor or nobody at all. The businesses that get cited are the ones with readable, specific websites. As more customers shift to asking AI assistants instead of scrolling Google results, the cost of having a thin or blocked website goes up.
The good news is that this is fixable. Unlike traditional SEO, where you compete against years of accumulated backlinks, AI recommendations are built per question from the pages the engine can find right now. A well-structured service page published today can be cited tomorrow. If you want help getting there, talk to us about a plan that fits your business.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do AI search engines choose which local businesses to recommend?
AI engines like ChatGPT and Gemini search the web, open a handful of pages, and write their answer from what they read. Studies show they cite business websites 85% of the time. If your website is among the pages they open, you have a 5x better chance of being recommended.
Do directories like JustDial help with AI search visibility?
Directories play a minor role in AI recommendations, accounting for only about 1.2% of cited sources. They still matter for Google Maps and local pack results, but for AI answers, your own website is far more important.
What pages on my website matter most for AI recommendations?
Service pages and location pages matter most. Businesses with service pages cited by AI had a 63% chance of being named first, compared with 47% for homepage-only. Pages that name the buyer’s city push that to 71%.
Does my website need to be crawlable by AI bots?
Yes. If AI crawlers cannot access your pages, the engine cannot read or cite them. Check your robots.txt file and server logs to make sure AI user agents are not blocked. This is the most common technical issue we see.
How long does it take for AI search to pick up new website content?
Unlike traditional SEO, which can take months of link building, AI engines build answers per question from pages they find right now. A well-structured service page can be cited within days of being indexed, especially if the content directly answers a customer question.
