AI Never Names 6 in 7 Local Businesses in New Study

A new study tested 6,682 local businesses across 25 US markets and found 85.6% were never recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity.

If you run a local business, here is a number worth pausing on: 85.6%. That is the share of local businesses that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity never recommended in a recent study across 25 US markets. Six in seven businesses, invisible to the AI assistants your customers are starting to use instead of Google.

The study, published by Seeably in October 2026, tested 6,682 businesses listed on Google across five industries and five cities. The findings make one thing clear: having a Google Business Profile and good reviews is no longer enough to show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a plumber, a dentist, or a restaurant. A study by Seeably found that 85.6% of local businesses were never named by any AI assistant.

Here is what the data actually says, and what you can do about it.

What the Study Found

Seeably ran its scans in October 2026, asking the four major AI assistants to recommend local businesses in 25 markets. They then checked every business Google lists in those same markets against the AI responses.

The headline finding: only 14.4% of businesses were named by at least one AI assistant. The other 85.6% were never mentioned by any of the four. That includes 1,611 businesses with 4.5 stars or higher and more than 100 Google reviews. Strong reviews did not guarantee AI visibility.

A separate study from Quaryan, published in November 2026, found a similar pattern in six Swiss cities. They asked the same 1,728 questions a month apart and found that only a third of named businesses stayed the same. The lists change, but the businesses left out tend to stay left out.

Reviews Are Not Enough

This is the part that surprises most business owners. The Seeably study found that businesses with excellent reviews were still being missed by AI assistants. The correlation between star rating and AI visibility was weak.

What did correlate? Having a website with substantial content. Businesses that AI assistants could read about, beyond just a Google profile, were far more likely to be recommended. A Cloute study of 64,441 AI answers found that when an AI assistant has read a business’s own web page, it names that business 84% of the time. When it has not, the rate drops to 16%.

In other words, AI recommends the businesses it has read about. If your online presence is just a Google listing and a Facebook page, the AI may not have enough to go on.

The Assistants Disagree

One thing the Seeably study made clear: the four AI assistants do not agree with each other. A business that ChatGPT recommends might not appear in Gemini’s answer at all. Perplexity and Claude often produce completely different lists for the same query.

This means optimizing for one AI assistant is not a strategy. You need to be visible across all of them, which means thinking about what they all read: web content, structured data, reviews on multiple platforms, and mentions in articles and directories.

Why This Matters for Businesses in India

The Seeably study covered US markets, but the pattern holds everywhere AI assistants are used. In India, ChatGPT and Gemini usage has been climbing fast, and Google’s AI Mode is now live in the country as of October 2026.

When someone in Chandigarh asks ChatGPT for the best CA firm in Sector 17, or the top dental clinic in Mohali, the AI draws on whatever it has read. If your business has a thin website, no blog content, and only a Google Business Profile, you are in the 85.6% that gets missed.

What You Can Do This Week

You do not need to rebuild your whole marketing strategy. But a few steps will move you from invisible to readable:

  • Write about your services in detail. Each service page should answer common questions a customer might ask an AI assistant. What do you do, who do you serve, where are you located, and what makes you different.
  • Add structured data to your website. Schema markup helps AI models understand your business type, location, and offerings. It is not a silver bullet, but it is one more signal.
  • Get mentioned in places AI reads. Industry directories, local news sites, and guest articles all count. The more sources an AI can find about your business, the more likely it is to recommend you.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile active. Posts, photos, and review responses all add content that AI models may encounter.
  • Check if you are already being recommended. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for the best business of your type in your city. If you are not there, you know where you stand.

The Bottom Line

The Seeably study is a wake-up call, not a verdict. AI search is still early, and the businesses that start building their AI visibility now will have a head start. The ones that wait will be in the same position as businesses that ignored Google SEO in 2005: wondering why competitors keep getting the calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AI visibility mean for local businesses?

AI visibility is whether your business gets recommended when someone asks an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for a local business recommendation. It depends on how much content the AI has read about your business, not just your Google reviews.

How many local businesses are recommended by AI?

According to the Seeably study of 25 US markets, only 14.4% of local businesses were named by at least one of four AI assistants. The other 85.6% were never recommended by any of them.

Do good Google reviews help with AI visibility?

Reviews help, but they are not enough on their own. The study found 1,611 businesses with 4.5+ stars and 100+ reviews that were never named by any AI assistant. Having a website with detailed content mattered more.

How can I check if my business is visible to AI?

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity for the best business of your type in your city. If your name does not come up, you are not visible to that assistant. Try it once a month to track changes.

What is the fastest way to improve AI visibility?

Write detailed service pages that answer customer questions, add schema markup to your website, and get listed in directories and publications that AI models read. Consistent content matters more than any single tactic.
