Google Connected Apps: Should SEOs Build Apps or Chase GEO?

Google's Connected Apps Platform lets businesses run apps inside Search and Gemini, but only five apps are live and it is US English only for now.

By admin 6 min read

Google launched its Connected Apps Platform on October 28, 2026, giving developers a single place to build and manage apps that run inside Google Search and the Gemini app. Within a day, prominent SEO consultant Marie Haynes told her newsletter readers she was “pretty sure” this would be “one of the most important things we will work on over the next few years.”

But the current reality is narrower than the hype suggests. In Search, connected apps run only in AI Mode, only in US English, and only five apps are listed so far. Google has not said how it chooses which app handles a request, or whether it will charge developers for the privilege.

So should your business build a connected app, or keep focusing on traditional GEO and AEO? Here is what we know, and what we recommend.

What the Connected Apps Platform Actually Is

Google’s announcement describes a system where developers connect a cloud-hosted MCP server, or an Android integration, to Google’s platform. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI models call outside tools and services. Once connected, an app can surface inside AI Mode search results and the Gemini app.

Google’s John Mueller described it as “a search platform” in a comment to Marie Haynes’s newsletter, though he noted that was a personal view, not an official product statement. The official documentation, updated around the October 28 launch, is more cautious.

For businesses, the pitch is simple: instead of getting your name mentioned in an AI answer, you could let users actually do something with your business inside the search result. Book a table, check inventory, schedule an appointment, without leaving Google.

What Marie Haynes Got Excited About

Haynes argued that the bigger opportunity in AI search lies in people using a business’s services inside Google, not in brand mentions on ChatGPT. Her newsletter, sent October 29, framed Connected Apps as “the start of the Agentic Web with so much opportunity.”

She emphasized that Google was inviting developers to create apps “for Search,” not just for Gemini. That distinction matters. If Google Search becomes a platform where third-party apps run, it changes what SEO means. Instead of optimizing pages to rank, you would be optimizing services to be chosen.

That is a real shift. But it is also a future state, not a present one.

The Limits Right Now

Here is what the documentation and reporting tell us about the current state:

  • Search integration is AI Mode only. Connected apps do not appear in regular Google Search results. They show up in AI Mode, which is a separate, opt-in experience.
  • US English only. The Search side is limited to the United States and English. Users in India, the UK, and other markets will not see connected apps in Search yet.
  • Five apps listed. As of early November 2026, only five connected apps are live in AI Mode. Google has not published a timeline for broader availability.
  • No published selection logic. Google has not said how it decides which app to surface for a given query. This is the black box that makes optimization difficult.
  • No monetization model yet. Google has not said whether it will charge developers for placement, take a cut of transactions, or keep it free.

PPC Land’s reporting noted that businesses building apps reach Search only through US English AI Mode, and that the five-app limit means most categories have no coverage at all.

Connected Apps vs GEO: Not Either-Or

The framing that you should build apps instead of doing GEO is premature. Here is why: GEO, or generative engine optimization, is about getting your business mentioned in AI-generated answers. Connected Apps is about letting users interact with your business inside the AI interface. These are different goals at different stages of the funnel.

GEO gets you discovered. Connected Apps get you used. You need both, but in the right order.

Right now, GEO is actionable. You can write content, structure your data, build citations, and see results in AI answers within weeks. Connected Apps is a developer project that most local businesses cannot even access yet.

Our recommendation: keep investing in AEO and GEO as your foundation. Watch Connected Apps as a future channel, especially if you run a booking-heavy business like a restaurant, clinic, or salon. When Google opens it up to more categories and markets, you want to be ready. But do not divert budget from content and visibility work that is producing results today.

What This Means for Indian Businesses

Connected Apps in Search is US English only. Indian businesses cannot benefit from it yet. But AI Mode itself launched in India in October 2026, so the foundation is being laid.

If Google follows its usual pattern, India will get Connected Apps support within 6 to 12 months of the US launch. Businesses that start thinking about what service they would connect, an appointment booking flow, a product catalog, a quote generator, will be positioned to move quickly when the doors open.

In the meantime, the businesses that win in AI search will be the ones with strong content, structured data, and mentions across multiple sources. That work is not glamorous, but it compounds. Learn more about how we approach it in our SEO services or see our packages.

The Bottom Line

Marie Haynes may well be right that Connected Apps becomes important. But “important in a few years” and “actionable today” are different things. For most local businesses in India, the highest-ROI work right now is building AI visibility through content, structure, and citations. Connected Apps is worth tracking, not worth chasing yet.
