Google Restaurant Ordering Controls: What Restaurants Should Do

Google now lets restaurants directly opt out of third-party ordering providers from their Business Profile dashboard. Here is what changed and why it matters for restaurants in India.

If you run a restaurant in Chandigarh, Mohali, or anywhere in India, Google just gave you more control over your online ordering. On October 28, 2026, Google added direct controls that let restaurants opt out of specific third-party ordering providers from their Google Business Profile dashboard. Search Engine Journal confirmed the details: restaurants can turn off a third-party ordering provider from the dashboard, with separate switches for pickup and delivery.

This is a bigger deal than it sounds. For years, restaurants have complained that Google’s ordering buttons sent customers to third-party platforms like Swiggy and Zomato, which charge high commission rates, without the restaurant’s consent. Now restaurants can decide which platforms show up on their Google profile and which do not.

What Changed

Before this update, Google automatically displayed ordering buttons for third-party platforms it detected on your Business Profile. If Swiggy, Zomato, or Uber Eats listed your restaurant, Google showed their ordering buttons. You had no say in which ones appeared. Customers clicked those buttons, landed on the third-party platform, and the platform took a commission that could be 20 to 30 percent per order.

Now, restaurants can go to their Google Business Profile dashboard and turn off specific ordering providers. The controls are separate for pickup and delivery, so you can allow delivery through one platform while blocking pickup through another. You can also skip third-party providers entirely and direct customers to order directly from your website.

This matters because direct orders have no commission. A customer who orders from your website pays you the full price. A customer who orders through Swiggy pays Swiggy’s commission on top. For a restaurant with thin margins, the difference between direct and third-party orders can be the difference between profit and loss.

How to Manage Your Ordering Providers

Log in to your Google Business Profile dashboard. Look for the ordering section under your restaurant profile. You should see a list of third-party ordering providers that Google has detected for your business. Each one should have separate toggles for pickup and delivery.

Go through each provider and decide whether you want it on or off. The decision should be based on two things: the commission rate and the order volume. If a platform charges high commission and sends low volume, turn it off. If a platform charges reasonable commission and sends meaningful volume, keep it on.

Also check whether your own website ordering is listed. If it is, make sure it is on. If it is not, add it. Google supports direct ordering links, and this is the one that costs you nothing per order.

Why This Matters for Indian Restaurants

India’s food delivery market is dominated by Swiggy and Zomato, both of which charge commission rates that range from 18 to 28 percent depending on the city and the restaurant’s negotiation power. For a restaurant in Chandigarh doing 50 delivery orders a day at an average order value of 400 rupees, Swiggy’s 22 percent commission costs about 88 rupees per order, or about 2,600 rupees per day. That is over 75,000 rupees per month in commission.

If even 30 percent of those customers could be redirected to order directly from your website, you save close to 23,000 rupees per month. That is the practical value of this update. It is not about Google giving you control. It is about Google giving you a way to redirect customers from commission-heavy platforms to your own commission-free channel.

The catch is that customers default to convenience. Swiggy and Zomato have better apps, faster checkout, and broader selection. Your website needs to be competitive on speed and ease of use, or customers will still choose the platform even if your Google profile sends them to your site. Our local SEO packages include website optimization for restaurants that want their direct ordering channel to be as fast as the platforms.

What to Do This Week

Three steps. First, log in to your Google Business Profile and review your ordering providers. Turn off any platform that charges high commission and sends low volume. Keep any platform that earns its commission through real order volume.

Second, make sure your direct ordering link is on your profile and works. Test it yourself on a phone. Does it open your website? Does it show your menu? Can a customer place an order in under two minutes? If any step is slow or broken, fix it. The best Google profile setup in the world does not help if your website ordering experience is worse than Swiggy’s.

Third, tell your customers. Add a note to your receipts, a sign at the counter, a line in your SMS confirmations: order direct from our website, no platform fees, same price. Customers who know you prefer direct orders will often choose it if the experience is comparable. Most customers use Swiggy because it is the default, not because they prefer it.

The Broader Picture for Restaurant SEO

Google’s ordering controls are part of a broader shift in how Google Business Profile works for restaurants. In the past few weeks alone, Google added a WhatsApp button to local panels, started automatically adding Facebook Messenger links, expanded AI-powered messaging, and now gave restaurants control over ordering providers. Each change gives the business more control over how customers contact them and how orders flow.

For restaurants, the pattern is clear. Google is building the infrastructure for direct customer-to-business communication, bypassing the third-party platforms that have inserted themselves between restaurants and customers. The restaurants that take advantage of these controls will keep more of their revenue. The ones that ignore them will keep paying commission on every order.
