Google Search Ads Lose Their Free Pass as AI Reshapes Budgets

Media buyers are questioning Google search ad spend for the first time in two decades as AI Overviews reduce clicks and Meta captures more revenue, per Q3 data.

For nearly 20 years, Google search ads were the one line item media buyers did not have to defend. That is no longer true. According to a Digiday report published November 2, 2026, advertisers are now putting Google search spend through the same scrutiny usually reserved for newer channels, and some are reallocating 10% to 30% of their Google budgets elsewhere.

The shift is driven by two forces: AI Overviews reducing click-through rates on traditional search results, and Meta’s ad business growing more than twice as fast as Google’s search unit. If you manage ad budgets for your business, here is what is happening and what to consider.

The Numbers: Meta 26% vs Google Search 12%

CNBC reported on November 1 that Meta’s ad revenue grew 26% in Q3 2026 to $63.1 billion, while Google’s search ad revenue grew just 12% to $63.4 billion. That 14-point gap is the widest in Meta’s favor since 2021, and it puts the two businesses neck and neck by size.

Alphabet’s stock had its worst day ever after the earnings report, plunging more than 12% and wiping out about $500 billion in market cap. Google executives blamed part of the search slowdown on AI Mode, the company’s chatbot-style search tab, which answers queries directly and reduces the number of clicks on traditional search ads.

Nate Elliott, an analyst at Emarketer, told CNBC: “If ChatGPT or Claude or Muse is better at helping them find what they are looking for, people’s search habits might change for the first time in a generation. That’s potentially catastrophic for Google’s ad business.”

Why Media Buyers Are Questioning Google Search Spend

Digiday spoke with 18 media buyers and found a consistent pattern. AI Overviews answer more queries directly on the results page, which means fewer people click through to advertiser websites. Google’s automated bidding tools, which are the default for most campaigns, compete for a shrinking pool of prime ad slots and push CPCs higher.

Lindsay Marty, founder of Above the Bar Marketing, told Digiday: “We’re having to look much more closely at what happens after the click and whether those clicks are actually producing qualified leads and revenue.” She said clients are open to shifting 10% to 20% of their Google budget into Meta and Local Services Ads when performance weakens.

Bryce Hamlin, VP of data intelligence at Power Digital, said marketing mix modeling and geo-testing show a greater impact from upper-funnel media and less from search. He estimates 10% to 30% of Google search budgets could be reallocated based on his clients’ data.

Farhad Divecha of Accuracast said about 10% of Google budgets are being questioned by his clients now, but with Black Friday approaching, that could rise to 20% or 30% quickly.

What This Means for Small Businesses in India

You might be thinking this is a big-brand problem. It is not. The same dynamics affect small businesses that rely on Google search ads for leads, especially in competitive markets like Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula.

If your Google search CPCs are rising and your lead volume is flat or dropping, AI Overviews are likely part of the reason. Google now shows AI-generated answers on over 80% of searches, and a study cited by Search Engine Roundtable found a 0.9% click-through rate from AI Overviews for sites that opted out. While that number is specific to opted-out sites, it signals a broader trend: fewer clicks on traditional results, even when ads are showing.

At the same time, Google expanded AI Mode ads to India on October 28, 2026. Your Search, Shopping, and PMax campaigns now automatically appear in AI Mode answers with no opt-out. This is a new surface, and while Google says CTR is similar to organic product listings, you should monitor whether those clicks convert differently. Our SEM and paid ads services can help you audit this.

The answer depends on your business, but here is a framework we use with clients:

  1. Check post-click quality, not just CPCs. If your CPCs are up 5% but your lead-to-customer rate has not changed, Google search is still working. If CPCs are up and lead quality is dropping, it is time to test alternatives.
  2. Test Meta ads with a small budget. Meta’s ad revenue is growing 26% for a reason: AI-powered targeting is working. Test 10% of your Google budget on Meta with clear conversion tracking and compare over 30 days.
  3. Invest in AI search visibility. If clicks on traditional results are declining, appearing inside AI Overviews and AI Mode answers becomes more valuable. This is not paid ads; it is content and structure optimization. See our AEO and GEO services for how this works.
  4. Do not abandon Google search. It is still the largest source of intent-based traffic in the world. The shift is about allocation, not replacement. Most businesses should keep the majority of their search budget on Google while testing reallocations at the margins.
  5. Use Local Services Ads if eligible. Several buyers mentioned LSAs as a beneficiary of budget shifts. They offer pay-per-lead pricing and appear prominently for local service queries. If you serve a local market, check eligibility.

The Broader Shift: Search Habits Are Changing

CNBC’s reporting frames this as a generational shift. For the first time, people have alternatives to Google for finding what they need. ChatGPT, Claude, Meta’s Muse, and Perplexity are all capturing queries that would have gone to Google search. As those tools improve, the share of searches that produce clicks on traditional results will keep declining.

This does not mean search ads are dead. Google still processes billions of queries a day, and search intent remains the highest-converting traffic source for most businesses. But the assumption that Google search ads are always the best use of every advertising rupee is no longer safe. You need data, not habit, to justify your spend.

Google’s own numbers tell the story. Search ad revenue grew 12% in Q3, the slowest pace this year. AI Mode is monetizing at a lower rate than traditional search, according to Google executives.

What to Do This Month

If you want to stay ahead of this shift, here are three things to do in November:

  • Run a 30-day budget split test: Move 10% of your Google search budget to Meta for 30 days and compare cost per lead and lead quality. Use dedicated tracking, not just platform dashboards.
  • Check your AI Mode performance: If you are in India, your ads are now showing in AI Mode. Look at your placement reports and see if AI Mode traffic converts at a different rate than standard search.
  • Build your AI search presence: Start optimizing your website for AI citations. If traditional search clicks are declining, appearing inside AI answers is your next growth surface.

This is not a panic moment. It is a planning moment. The businesses that adapt their budgets based on data, not habit, will be the ones that come out ahead. If you want help, check our packages or reach out directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Google search ads still worth it in 2026?

Yes, Google search ads remain the largest source of intent-based traffic, but they are no longer the only option worth considering. With AI Overviews reducing click rates and CPCs rising, advertisers should test budget allocation across Meta, Local Services Ads, and AI search visibility rather than putting everything into Google search.

How much of my Google budget should I reallocate?

Media buyers Digiday spoke with are questioning 10% to 30% of their Google search budgets. Start with a 10% reallocation test over 30 days, compare cost per lead and lead quality across channels, and adjust based on data. Do not move large budgets without testing first.

What is happening with Google AI Mode ads in India?

Google expanded AI Mode ads to India and nine other countries on October 28, 2026. Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible to appear in AI Mode answers. You cannot opt out. Google says CTR is similar to organic product listings, but advertisers should monitor conversion rates carefully.

Why is Meta’s ad revenue growing faster than Google’s?

Meta’s ad revenue grew 26% in Q3 2026 compared to Google search’s 12%, according to CNBC. Meta benefits from AI-powered targeting tools and increased time spent on Instagram, while Google search faces headwinds from AI chatbots reducing traditional search clicks.

How do AI Overviews affect my Google search ad performance?

AI Overviews now appear on over 80% of Google searches and answer queries directly on the results page. This can reduce the number of people who click through to traditional search results and ads, potentially raising CPCs for the remaining slots. Monitor your click-through rates and post-click conversion data to measure the impact.
